Meet Joy Zappacosta: User Experience Designer at Comcast
What do you love most about your job?
As a part of the Comcast learning organization, I love when I can make the experience of our learners as smooth as possible. Over the past two years, we have seen so many changes within the working world. While people are changing jobs, adapting to new environments, or picking up new hobbies, the opportunity for learning new skills has grown tremendously. Our organization has embraced this change, and we are working meticulously on creating new learning opportunities that are reflective and supportive of this new world.
How have other women helped shape your career? I've been very lucky to have inspiring leaders at multiple points in my career. In the early stages, a female superior taught me to look at the big picture - beyond the job descriptions. Without that, I may never have taken some of the opportunities presented to me. A boss in a different organization taught me about gratitude and appreciation. She once gave me a $10 Starbucks gift card and said "I can see that you are trying really hard, and you are doing a good job" - which I still remember clearly. A Creative Director that I looked up to in that organization shared with me her missteps, and the trials of being a woman in our industry. Because of her, I dare to ask for more and seek information about gendered hiring practices. Another great boss of mine taught me about speaking with restraint, grace, and poise while leading with strength. Lastly, I learned to be the type of leader who will lead by example. Having had a leader be hands-on, and not afraid to show her work, I was able to learn from the thought process. Because of this boss, I was able to understand why some ideas work better than others and how to scale. Indeed, as I write this, I realize I am so tremendously lucky to have had all of these women in my career path at each time. They continue to inspire me and I hope I can do justice to the wisdom they imparted to me by sharing it with others.
Outside of work, what's something you're passionate about? Over the past two years, I embrace my physical activity in slightly different ways. Before the pandemic, you would find me in group fitness classes almost every other day. These past two years have allowed me to be more introspective with my mind/body relationship. I find that I am more in tune with my body's needs, my energy, and what works for me versus what doesn't. I've become more grateful for simple things, such as fresh air, sunshine, taking walks, and my own company. Becoming more present, observing mindfulness, and controlling my breath continue to be in practice for me - whether I'm in a crowded gym or home alone.
What do you value most about your membership with The WICT Network? The WICT Network has been such a highly visible organization within Comcast. My first leader, as well as the senior leaders of my department, were strong advocates for the network. Being surrounded by women who inspired me so quickly, made me realize the learning potential for myself by being in the same room. This year, I had the honor of participating in The WICT Network mentorship program with Stella Grizont. I would find a direct, personal connection as I listened to the videos on my walks or bike rides. Because of this program, I got to meet a fantastic mentor, who helped me figure out how my brain is programmed - and take actions to reprogram. As a mentee, I received new, engaging resources to power my career journey. I've even been inspired to try new things - which has led me to this board position. I sincerely value the opportunity to learn from this amazing network and strengthen my relationships with all of these inspiring women.
